Warming centre available in Williams Lake during extreme cold warning

The City of Williams Lake has opened a daytime warming centre.

Environment Canada predicts temperatures could fall below minus 30 degrees overnight, with a potential to get closer to normal by early next week.

Latest extreme cold temperature story can be found here.

Director of Protective Services,  Evan Dean says the warming centre will be open from 9:00am until 5:00pm beginning tomorrow (Thursday, January 11th) in the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex lobby.

“As Protective Services, we’re always going to be concerned about anybody that’s unhoused, especially anybody that’s out in this kind of weather condition.”

“We want to try and find any opportunity we can to try and get them out of the cold and warmed up the best we can.” says Dean.

Dean added that depending on the duration of the extreme cold weather, the City will adjust or extend the availability.

As for temporary overnight accommodations, he says there’s the Hamilton Inn Shelter operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association – Cariboo Chilcotin Branch, which has 15 beds available throughout the winter.

Dean mentions that there’s also the Cariboo Friendship Centre that offers 30 beds, including a family unit, as temporary overnight accommodations.
