Nearly a quarter of a million dollars !
That’s how much money the Quesnel Community Foundation managed to raise in this year’s 50-thousand dollar challenge.
President Bob Salmons has the final tally.
“It was very successful. We collected 235 thousand dollars, which is the most by far that we’ve ever had, and that included the 50 thousand dollars from an anonymous donor because we were successful in meeting that challenge, and there was also a large donation from the Women’s Fall Challenge that they used to have every September I believe.”
Salmons says that money will bump their endowment fund up to around 4.6 million dollars.
It is the earnings from that that then goes back into the community in the form of grants and bursaries.
“The grant application cycle is now open. It opened as of January 2nd and will run until February 29th. There is also a grant application workshop that our Coordinator Shirley Keen will be running on January 11th from 10 am til noon at the Seniors Centre in Quesnel. Anybody that’s interested in that, either applying or attending that workshop, can get in touch with Shirley at 250-985-1612 or at [email protected].”
The next awards will be given out in April.
Salmons says the Foundation gave out more than 140 thousand dollars to non-profit groups and organizations last year., as well as an additional 20 thousand in scholarships and bursaries.
That total is more than a million since the Foundation began after Quesnel hosted the 2000 BC Winter Games.
