Williams Lake Councillor gets positive feedback over Highway 20 concerns

The safety surrounding cyclists and pedestrians at Highway 20 was a topic of discussion at this weeks Williams Lake Council meeting.

Councillor Joan Flaspohler put out a memorandum, regarding improvements to the highway for safe active transportation and Clean BC 2030 initiatives.

She says this has been an issue on her mind since campaigning for her role.

“The infrastructure there, it just makes it feel so unsafe, and there’s barely room for pedestrians, and even some of the barricades that are placed make it so that you would have to dismount your bike before you can get on the sidewalk.” says Flaspohler.

Flaspohler made an effort to have this be discussed at a Union of British Columbia Municipalities meeting, however it wasn’t received by the Ministers to talk about.

She then brought the issue to staff, which saw community and council support.

It was mentioned during the council meeting that plenty of emails have already flooded in to support Highway 20 improvements.

Flaspohler says that it’s become very apparent that it needs some extra attention, because to put adults or youth on active transportation there is a challenge.
