Williams Lake and Quesnel rank top 10 on overall Crime Severity Index

Stats Canada revealed their Crime Severity Index values for 2022, as Williams Lake and Quesnel reach top 10.

Williams Lake was ranked seventh in the country, and first in the province with an overall crime severity index of 246.3, which numbers provided are for populations of over 10,000 people.

Mayor Surinderpal Rathor says it’s sad to see, as council and staff continue to work on the issue.

“Prolific offenders are the biggest problem for us. We’re working with the ministry, we’re working with the local detachment, everybody’s putting their two bits in it, hopefully we’ll nail it down.” says Rathor.

Even with the ranking, Williams Lake did see a decrease in actual incidents with 2,359, which is the lowest it’s been as far back as 1998.

Quesnel finds themselves trailing Williams Lake, ranking eighth in the country, and second in the province with an overall crime severity index of 245.2.

Similarly, Quesnel’s actual incidents also went down to 2,452, the lowest it’s been since 2017.

There’s only one other municipality in BC listed in the top 10 of the Crime Severity Index values for 2022, which is Langley City at 10.
