Cariboo Fire Centre dealing with two new fires

There are a couple of new wildfires burning in the Cariboo Fire Centre region.

Fire Information Officer Madison Dahl says one, near Chimney Lake, was identified on Saturday afternoon at around 3 o’clock.

“BC Wildfire Service blanketed the fire with retardant on Saturday and a combined effort between our personnel and the Chimney Fire Department actioned the fire with water Saturday and Sunday.  This (Monday) morning the Chimney Fire Department scanned the fire and they are currently sweeping it for any remaining hot spots.”

Dahl says the fire grew to about 0.4 hectares but is now listed as under control and they hope to call it out shortly.

She says another new fire is burning just east of Williams Lake.

“It was reported this (Monday) morning.  We are unsure of the cause but we do have BC Wildfire personnel and air support on site at this moment, it’s brand new.”

Dahl says it is also quite small at around 0.09 hectares in size.

There are 10 wildfires burning in the Cariboo.

“There are two in the Chilcotin, one in the 100 Mile zone, and seven of them are in the Williams Lake/Central Cariboo area.”

None are fires of note.

Dahl says a few fires in the Horsefly area have been burning for a few days now.

“We are using what’s called a modified response to action these fires, just due to their location and the terrain.  They are all being monitored but over the weekend we did see some increased winds so there was a little bit of pickup, people may have noticed some smoke or flame in the area.”

Dahl says a smoky skies bulletin is being issued for the Horsefly area.
