City of Quesnel and CRD hold final open house on pool referendum

The cost.

That was the biggest concern raised last night at an open house at the Legion in Quesnel on the upcoming pool referendum.

Barb Bachmeier, the Regional District Director for Area B and the CRD spokesperson, says they heard from people on both sides of the vote.

“A lot of people are concerned about you know pensioners being on fixed incomes, how are they going to pay for it.  But a lot of people that I’ve talked to are actually in favour of this project.  They see the attraction for out of town people coming and moving and living here.”

Sub Regional Recreation residents are being asked to borrow up to 35 million dollars for the project.

That works out to 75 dollars per 100 thousand dollars worth of assessment.

Bachmeier says it is important for people to have their say.

“If people don’t come out and vote on this referendum then somebody else is going to come out and vote and make the decision for you.  Obviously everyone has an opinion, but an opinion doesn’t count unless you put a mark on a ballot, so I encourage everyone to come out and vote.”

600 people voted at an advance poll on Wednesday and there is another chance to vote early on Monday (June 5) at City Hall.

General voting day is on Saturday, June 10th.

Voting will take place at City Hall in Quesnel, Barlow Creek School, Ecole Red Bluff Lhtako Elementary, and Bouchie Lake School.

The project includes the replacement of the existing leisure pool, hot tub, and saunas, as well as a new larger leisure pool featuring a lazy river, a water slide, and improvements to the change rooms.
