The District of Wells has big plans for the 588 thousand dollars in provincial funding it received from the Stronger Communities Fund.
Mayor Ed Coleman says they are getting a new fire truck.
“We’ve got a 2021 Freightliner fire truck that we’ve just finished negotiating on. We’ve acquisitioned one that is coming out of Red Deer, Alberta and we should have it in the next 10 days.”
Coleman says that is really good news and timely.
“The old truck wouldn’t pass the certifications anymore and that happens. You know you get it tested and if anything fails they won’t continue to certify it, and that happened with the unit that we had which was shared with Barkerville.”
Coleman says the truck was 350 thousand dollars plus taxes.
“It was a very good deal. It’s a 2021 unit and other parts of the truck are dated after 2012 which is good, you can still get 10 years out of those items but most of the truck is brand new. The whole frame is, the engine, the cab that the fire fighters are in when they’re transported.”
Coleman says the rest of the money they received from the province will be used on a new roof at their school.
“We call it our community, culture and recreation centre. That roof will get replaced this summer and that’s the anchor to keep that building in tap, it’s just a little bit younger than Helen Dixon. It was built in 1942. It’s the same design as Helen Dixon that was built in 1937.”
Helen Dixon Centre is located in Quesnel.
Coleman says Osisko Development is contributing to the cost of the new roof as well.
He says Osisko has committed 512 thousand dollars to that building over the next few years.
