Firesmart initiatives to be taking place in Quesnel

As the fire season begins to roll in, it’s a good time to make sure you’re prepared.

The different initiatives include a Firesmart assessment for local residents, preparation for a farm and ranch fire plan, and a cost recovery component through the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The big thing is Firesmart is getting information into the hands of residents, because we’re coming up on another fire season this year, but who knows what summer’s going to bring,” say Ted Traer, Firesmart Coordinator.

“but we found in recent years that things are more extreme, and the fire seasons are lasting longer and more intense.”

Traer added that an assessment could be important for more mature neighbourhoods, due to the increased shrubbery and conifer, which are highly flammable.

He said if residents could remove that fuel within the first 30 feet around your home, you have a 90 percent chance of the house being there if a wildfire comes through.
