Quesnel City Council will provide an interest-free loan to the Royal Canadian Legion

The Royal Canadian Legion in Quesnel will be getting a helping hand from City Council to complete a dock project.

Council received a request at last (Tuesday) night’s meeting to provide short term financing to complete a project to install a new dock at Legion Beach on Dragon Lake.

Jeff Norburn is the Director of Community Services.

“The Branch is planning to purchase and install a new accessible and expanded dock at Legion Beach which will improve access to the lake for both the community and visitors, and increase use and attract special events to the region.”

Norburn noted that the branch needed help despite the fact that it had received grant funding to fully cover the cost of the $93,500 project.

“While the branch has received some of these funds in advance, unfortunately they won’t receive all of the grant funding until after the project is complete and the final reports have been submitted resulting in a situation where the Branch has obtained sufficient funding to undertake a project but has insufficient cash-on-hand to complete the work.”

That led to a request for an interest-free loan of $53,500.

Norburn noted that it was permitted under the Community Charter and that it was something that Council had done recently with the curling centre.

The vote was unanimous.

The Branch plans to do the work in the spring or summer.
