Construction on Building to House $1.8 Million Dollar Biomass Boiler System underway at Cataline

A building to house a new biomass boiler system is currently being constructed at Cataline Elementary School in Williams Lake.

Secretary-Treasurer for School District 27, Kevin Futcher says the system had been in the planning stages for about a year and goes back 2 or 3 years.

“It’s part of our initiative to reduce our carbon emissions and reduce our heating costs in our schools,” he says.

“These pellets boiler systems have probably reduced our heating costs by approximately 40% and CO2 emissions by 80%”

Futcher says only two other schools within School District have such systems-one in Tatla Lake and the other in Alexis Creek.

School District 27 has secured funding of $416,000 for the $1.8 biomass system from the province’s Carbon Neutral Capital Program.

It is expected to be up and running by January-February 2016.
