Tsilhqot’in National Government Have Their Voices Heard At United Nations

A delegation from the Tsilhqot’in National Government was at the United Nations in New York to speak on several issues.

Tribal Chair of the TNG, Chief Joe Alphonse said while they were there last week, they spoke about environmental changes, disasters, food security, and the 2017 fires.

“We were there to talk about those issues and to raise the issues about those situations, and really what was behind all of that, in our opinion, was the mismanagement of forests that needs to have Indigenous voices in all of the planning and stuff like that.”

Alphonse noted that Chilcotin people having Aboriginal Title is big and inspirational for other Indigenous people in other countries.

Having the opportunity to speak on behalf of the Tsilhqot’in National Government at the U-N, we asked Alphonse how he see’s things moving forward from this visit.

“It puts the Chilcotin on the map. When dealing with Government if you don’t raise issues, you’re not going to get anywhere. Government’s aware that you have a voice and you’re being listened to, especially on a global scale, then it’s definitely it’s going to help and assist in the advancing of our (TNG) own issues with both Provincial and Federal Governments.”
