First Nations Chief to Hold Williams Lake Council Accountable Towards Reconciliation

The opening of City Council had Esk’etemc First Nation Chief Fred Robbins speak on reconciliation.

Robbins spoke about the 10 year anniversary for truth and reconciliation, with a four day event at the end of September.

He voiced that he wants to see members of council apart of the committee. They would be made up of people that would see the plans go through.

Along with that, he also spoke about holding City Council accountable to reconciliation.

Chief Fred Robbins said “We need to start to turn this page to a new chapter, and to do that, the First Nations need to be heard. Not just listened to.”

He further added that he wants decision making authority in his territory, and needs support from the municipal governments and regional districts. Then Council will start to see reconciliation.

“155 years of being kicked down. Finally they’re talking reconciliation. For me it’s just a word, until I actually see it happening.” said Chief Robbins

His message to council closed out by saying that it isn’t going to be easy, but anything that’s easy is too good to be true.

Council made it clear that they would support and work along side Chief Robbins.
