Temperature records set in Quesnel and Williams Lake

There were record-setting temperatures in both Quesnel and Williams Lake for November 7th yesterday (Monday) for lowest daytime highs.

Alyssa Charbonneau, a Meteorologist with Environment Canada, goes over some of the numbers.

“Quesnel hit -10.6 and that broke the previous coldest daytime high of -10 which was set in 1973, and Williams Lake reached -12.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record for lowest maximum for yesterday was -12.2 set in 1973.”

Charbonneau says the normal daytime high for this time of year is plus 3.

She says Williams Lake also set a record for the lowest temperature on November 7th.

“Williams Lake got down to -16 overnight.  The previous record was -15.8 in 1986. That was a bit of an anomaly though because the days on either side were quite a bit cooler for overnight lows, but certainly it’s much much colder than we’re use to seeing at this time of year.”

Charbonneau says the normal low for early November is just -4.

Looking ahead, it doesn’t appear any records will be broken for today. (Nov 8)

“If we get our daytime of -11, it looks like neither Williams Lake or Quesnel would hit the low maximum for that day.  The record for Quesnel is -11.4 degrees in 1924, and the record for Williams Lake is -14.2 set in 1986.  And overnight lows are well into the -20’s and it doesn’t look like we’re going to drop down quite that low tonight.”

Charbonneau says the record low for Quesnel on this day is -25.6 degrees.
