Cariboo region’s job numbers were headed in the right direction in September

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region was down last month compared to a year ago.

Vincent Ferrao is a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada.

“The unemployment rate came in at 5.2 percent last month. It was 6.3 percent a year ago.”

The 5.2 was also down from 6.2 percent last month, and is the lowest it has been since May.

Ferrao says there were more people working in the region and fewer people unemployed.

“There were 89,000 even employed in the region. A year ago there were 86,000. Unemployed 4,900 last month and a year ago it was 5,800.”

He says the gains were in the service sector.

“More people were working in wholesale and retail trade and healthcare and social assistance. There was a decline in manufacturing.”

BC’s jobless rate was 4.3 percent.

Only Saskatchewan was lower at 4.1

The national unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in September, down from 5.4 in August.

Accident on Highway 97 On Ramp Closed Section Briefly

A single vehicle merging onto Highway 97 Northbound in Quesnel, hit a traffic pole. Police and the Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department closed the ramp down as the accident was assessed. Only the driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital with suspected minor injuires.
