Quesnel City Council endorses grant application for new trail to connect the waterfront and downtown

Quesnel City Council has given the green light to apply for a grant to the BC Ministry of Transportation’s Active Transportation Fund for 710 thousand dollars.

Chris Coben, the Director of Capital Works & Infrastructure, says an existing trail connecting Front Street to the Riverfront Trail is steep, very narrow, rough, and is falling over and in need of replacement.

“This line would provide accessibility in both directions, south towards the foot bridge leading towards West Quesnel and then also tying back to head north to the hospital and beyond. This would enable users to avoid the alternative of narrow sidewalks on Highway 97 and Front Street.”

Coben noted that this project was previously identified in the 5 year Capital Plan.

If successful, the city would put in 213 thousand dollars out of Federal Gas Tax Funds.
