The Games are still three plus years out, but plans are already in place to host the event.
It will be co-hosted by the City of Quesnel and the Lhtako Dene Nation.
Mayor Bob Simpson says the process will start to ramp up in January.
“The first task that we’re going to have will be the nomination process and vetting process for the organizing committee. Then we’ll go from the main organizing committee to the sports coordination function through the various sports organizations.”
Simpson says they will then start to lock in what events will be held in the spring.
“That will allow us starting in September of 2022 to begin to work with the various organizations in our own internal process to make sure that those venues, it’ll give us about 18 months, to start preparing those venues to host the various competitions.”
Simpson says the sooner they get to that point the better.
“The sooner we can lock in what sports, what venues, the more able we will be to look at those venues through the lens of the various competitions, work with the organizations, get grant funds and other sources of funding, to be able to make sure that those venues are absolutely top notch and we host the best event possible.”
He says they already know that the Hallis Lake Cross Country Ski venue, the arenas, and the schools will be busy during the games.
Simpson says he also plans to go down to Vernon to spend some time looking at how they host the 2022 BC Winter Games, and he says he also took in some of the Canada Winter Games in Prince George.
