Demolition for Slumber Lodge?

The City of Williams Lake will be considering the demolition of three buildings located at 27 Seventh Avenue South at Tuesday’s regular City Council Meeting.

The City has been dealing with non-compliance issues with the owners of the Slumber Lodge for a number of years according to Senior Bylaw Officer Brendan Foote.

He says in a report that the property has become a fire hazard, a health and safety hazard, a nuisance, a blight to the community and labor intensive for Bylaw staff as well as the RCMP.

The building was boarded up in June of 2012 and since then there have been multiple breaches.

Foote says the bylaw department has had to deal with multiple bylaw infractions at the Slumber Lodge including garbage, unsightly premises, graffiti, derelict vehicles, and derelict buildings.

The RCMP has attended the Slumber Lodge over 20 times since June of 2012.

The owner had contacted the bylaw department and stated that he would like to apply for a building permit and bring the buildings up to code on October 17, 2014.

Although he had spoken with the Building Inspector on June 18, 2015, and picked up an application for a building permit, a completed building permit application to date has not been received.

The bylaw department is currently at the stage of derelict building process where the owner has failed to obtain a permit for ten months and the last step is to seek a remedial action to have the buildings demolished.

The Williams Lake Fire Department had responded to structure fire in one of the rooms on July 4, 2014.

Tuesday’s regular City Council Meeting takes place at City Hall starting at 6.
