Controversy Over Celebration of Life Week

Controversy has erupted in Williams Lake over this week having been proclaimed Celebration of Life.

Local pro-choice activist, Carrie Julius, gathered with others outside of the Williams Lake City Hall at noon to protest the proclamation and call the city to rescind it.

Julius says her opinion against the proclamation stems from the group that proposed the celebration.

“The Choice for Life Society is an explicitly religious anti-abortion group, according to their website. The proclamation represents a close attempt to get the City to approve an anti-choice viewpoint that would deny women their Charter rights.”

Julius adds that she has written letters to the Mayor and Council to protest the unanimous approval of the proclamation, that she says does not make any sense.

“Why our City Councils needs to be involved in such a controversial matter such as a pro-choice or pro-choice argument is beyond me. It’s not really something that represents all of Williams Lake.”

Julius says the Mayor and some City Councillors have offered to meet with her to discuss the matter.

The Celebration of Life Week was proclaimed by the City Of Williams Lake from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5.
