Day of Mourning in Williams Lake: honoring lives lost and renewing commitment for safe workplaces

From the Cariboo Regional District to Tolko, individuals gathered at the Williams Lake cenotaph this morning for this year’s National Day of Mourning.

Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett says everybody should be able to come home from work safely.

“My dad lost his legs many, many years ago. Probably in the late ’50s, I can’t remember, in a mill accident in the Lower Mainland; he survived,” she says.

“In 1999 in 100 Mile, when I was Mayor, our Fire Chief was killed going to rescue in a fire truck. We do learn from these things and we have to continually learn from these things to make the workplace safer.”

Barnett says although governments can pass all the rules and legislation that they want at the end of the day it is up to all of us in the workplace to ensure safety for each other.

203 workers lost their lives in British Columbia last year according to the B.C Federation of Labour; two of those from the Cariboo.

A Day of Mourning is scheduled to take place in Quesnel at the corner of Doherty and Anderson Drive West Village later this afternoon.
