Board Of Education To Talk Cannabis In Quesnel Tonight

The legalization of marijuana will be on the agenda at tonight’s Board of Education meeting in Quesnel.

Chair Gloria Jackson says the BC School Trustees Association have provided some discussion points and is seeking their input on them….

“As an example, the minimum age of 19 is consistent with the minimum age for tobacco and alcohol, so that is something that we will be talking about tonight.”

Jackson says another topic is distribution and again whether it’s done like alcohol though the government or sold privately.

She says education is also important to the Board…

“Exactly what they do with tobacco and alcohol consumption now, they do educate, we have curriculum around that so we would like to see some curriculum and education around that as well.”

And like those products, cannabis would also be prohibited on school property.

Jackson says they may also make other submissions as well…

“I believe the deadline is actually by November 1st so that will go fairly quickly, but also Districts are encouraged to put in their own feedback to the Ministry if they have something specific that they want to talk about, so that may come up tonight as well.”

Jackson says the BC School Trustees Association will be gathering all of the feedback from districts in the province and forwarding it in one document to the BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
