5% tax hike proposed as 2015 budget publicly unveiled

Quesnel City Council has now officially presented it’s 2015 Budget to the public, a budget that is proposing that taxpayers pay 5 percent more than they did the previous year.

The extra money collected, roughly $34.56 for the average homeowner, will by by-law all go into the Capital Re-investment plan to help address an annual infrastructure deficit of $2 million dollars.

Director of Finance Kari Bolton, speaking at last night’s City Council meeting, noted that even with the increase Quesnel residents are still paying a lot less than most of their neighbours…

Bolton also went over the City’s debt.

It currently stands at just under $7.2 million dollars, almost $4.5 million of which is for the City Hall building that won’t be paid off until 2030.

The others are more than $1.4 million for Southhills water, $810,000 for a fire truck and $464,000 for the Johnston Bridge, which will be paid off in 2018.

The budget must be adopted by May 15th.
