The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region is the highest it’s been since the recession of 2009.
Andrew Fields, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats-Canada, says it was 9.7 percent last month, which is up from just 7.4 percent a year ago.
Fields adds however that the jump is not because of declines in the job market…
“There were 79,500 people working which is an increase compared to last February. There were about 28-hundred more people working this February compared to last February.”
Fields says there were a lot more people looking for work however which drove the unemployment rate up.
The Jobless rate in the Cariboo was 8.8 percent last month and 7.4 in January.
