Quesnel Residents Can Expect Some Fee Increases For 2017

What is the tipping point for tipping fees ?

That is the question that Quesnel City Council will soon be dealing with, at least for residents who use the landfill in the new year.

Council gave the first three readings to it’s Master Fee bylaw last night that included an increase in tipping fees to 60 dollars a tonne, up from 50, with minimum charge of 20 dollars, up from 15.

It mostly effects commercial users but residents with loads of more than 350 kilograms will also have to pay.

Councillor Shushil Thapar feels they should only pay above what’s free.

For example, if they have 370 kilograms, he says they should just pay for the 20 kilograms that they are over as technically they already pay for the 350 that is free through their residential rates.

Thapar’s concerns will be addressed by the Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee before coming back to Council for final reading.

Other changes announced last night include a 5 percent increase in water rates, which amounts to $8.84 to the average resident, but a zero percent hike for sewer.
