Quesnel Library Has New Carving

The Cariboo Regional District unveiled a carving at the Quesnel Branch Library late yesterday afternoon.

It was donated by local teacher Mat Johnston.

The carving depicts an owl from the popular Harry Potter series and includes a space to display books.

Johnston it is made out of Douglas Fir and weighs around 50 kilograms.

He says it would take him roughly 3 or 4 days of straight carving to make something like this.

Johnston says he starts out with the chain sawing part just to rough it out.

He says he then does some of the detailing, the feathering, the eyes and the face with some special power tools.

Johnston says he’s done other birds and salmon in the past.
