Cariboo Job Numbers Remain Flat

August was another really good month for BC but the Cariboo continues to sit on the sidelines when it comes to sharing in that success.

BC is leading the country right now in job creation with an employment growth rate of 3.1 percent, compared to the national average of just 0.4 percent, and also has the lowest unemployment rate at 5.5 percent.

But it’s a different story here in the Cariboo.

Andrew Fields is a Labour Market Analyst with Stats-Canada…

“the unemployment rate in Cariboo was 7.7 percent in August. That is basically the same as it was last August when it was 7.8 percent. In August 2016 there were 79,800 people working and that is almost exactly the same figure from last august.”

Fields says there were roughly 80 thousand people working in the Cariboo region in August of 2015.

There were slight increases in the number of people working in agriculture and natural resources and some declines in the accommodation and food services and public administration sectors.
