Verdict Is In For Quesnel Man Accused Of Assaulting A Police Officer

A Quesnel man, charged in connection with the assault of a police officer, has been found guilty on two lesser charges.

Raymond Kozuchar, 67 at the time of his arrest two years ago, was found guilty of Willfully Obstructing a Police Officer and Escaping From Lawful Custody.

The judge found him not guilty of Assaulting a Police Officer and Assault Causing Bodily Harm.

Three other charges, including Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample, were stayed prior to his trial.

Kozuchar will be back in court at a later date for sentencing.

Quesnel RCMP say they stopped a vehicle on the Barkerville Highway back in June of 2014 and that the driver, when asked to provide a breath sample as part of an impaired driving investigation, refused.

Police say the driver then resisted arrest and that he and his 23-year old son began striking the officer in the head until a second officer arrived on scene.

The first officer was taken to hospital where he was treated for head injuries and a dislocated shoulder.

Ryan Kozuchar was also charged in connection with this incident.

He pled guilty in March of 2015 to charges of Assaulting a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest and was sentenced to 165 days in jail.
