The Quesnel and District SPCA has literally gone to the cats.
Branch Manager Colby O’Flynn says they’re desperately looking for people to adopt or even become foster homes.
“Every spot we have in the shelter for an animal is filled and we still have people showing up every day with more. As of today, with the couple of cats that we had show up that were in desperate need to come in, we literally have nowhere to put another animal.”
O’Flynn says at this point they are asking the public that if they have an animal they need to bring to the SPCA to call them so they can be put on a waitlist.
She says once they have space that opens up through adoptions, transfers, or foster homes, those animals will be slowly brought into the shelter.
The “kitten season” trend which is currently being seen across the province is due to intact cats-both indoor and outdoor.
“People maybe don’t realize how many unwanted kittens there are out there and think that maybe my cat will just have one litter,” says O’Flynn.
“Even one litter, you have a litter of 7 kittens that’s taking away potential homes of 7 kittens who are waiting at a shelter somewhere.”
O’Flynn says they want to encourage people to get their cats fixed, and that if you’re low-income the Branch can help and will even give a coupon for $75 off to use at any local vet.
The Quesnel and District SPCA is open from Tuesday until Saturday from 12 pm until 4 pm.
