CRD Director Says Fort Mac Fire Proof Cariboo Needs New Roads.

The Cariboo Regional District Director for Area C says the Fort McMurray wildfire is a prime example of why it’s important to have more than one road in and out of a community.

John Massier says communities in rural BC are constantly facing fire hazards and he says other things can happen as well.

He says “you look at a community like Wells or Bowron Lake and we have one road in and one road out. thank god for the people of Fort Mac that they had two options. When that fire approached their community they went north and they went south depending on where they were in the community.”

Massier says he would hate to imagine what could have happened if Fort McMurray was at the end of a dead end road and trying to evacuate.

He says that’s why the communities of Nazko and Klukus could use another road.

Massier says a road to the proposed New Gold Mine would make sense as it would also be an economic boost.

And he says a circle route to Wells, Bowron Lake and Barkerville would also do the trick in terms of safety as well as boost tourism in that case.

Something going on in the Cariboo you think people should know about?
