Heavy Metal Rocks Returns to Williams Lake

Students interested in a career in the construction industry will have a chance to have hands-on experience operating heavy machinery tomorrow.

Dave Corbett, Coordinator for Career Programs with School District 27, says this is their sixth year now for Heavy Metal Rocks and that the industry and local businesses have just bought in.

“And of course once something starts rolling, it just seems more and more people want to get involved and so we’re very fortunate in our community. This runs because we have such a buy in of so many industries in our community and it’s not a sacrifice-they love being involved.”

24 students from Peter Skene Ogden and Williams Lake City Secondary and the Grow Centre, will be taking part in the “heavy metal” lesson at Centennial Gravel Pit from Wednesday to Saturday.

Experienced equipment operators act as mentors to the students, who were chosen by completing an application form and then an interview, during the event.

Over 40 local companies, including SMS Equipment, Mount Polley Mining Corporation, Taseko, Tolko, and West Fraser have donated time, equipment, and food services.
