Cooler weather aids crews fighting wildfires in the Cariboo

There are 5 active wildfires in the Cariboo Fire Centre and all are listed as Under Control.

Fire Information Officer Donna MacPhearson said crews have been able to take advantage of the cooler weather.

“Including in those five are the Hotnarko fire 24 kilometres South South West of Anahim Lake and the Emerald Fire approximately 40 kilometres west of the 108. Crews are mopping up these fires and patrolling for smoke and heat to extinguish the hot spots.”

MacPhearson said they expect those fires to be scanned this week so crews will be using drones at night to look for heat signatures.

“Then they’ll be provided with those dots on the map and crews will then undertake a seek and destroy mission to find those hot spots they weren’t able to find the first go round.”

MacPhearson noted that they are seeing a couple more days of cooler weather then seeing increasing daytime temperatures and lowering humidity.

“This could make the centre of some of the larger fires a little bit more active so if people are watching the smoke it may not be a concern as long as it stays within the perimeter of the fire.”

MacPhearson noted that the Cariboo Fire Centre has had 143 fires so far this year, 88 have been lightning and 53 are human caused and 2 are undetermined.
