Abandoned Homeless Camp Sets Logs Ablaze Beside Quesnel Soccer Fields

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department put out a fire this morning along a bank of the Fraser River.

“A log pile was on fire near the Soccer Facility,” says Fire Chief Ron Richert. “It was about a 20 by 20 area of a log pile from a homeless encampment that was fully involved.”

Richert says the encampment looked to have been pre-existing for some time, and the log pile caught on fire from a smoldering fire that was left unattended.

He adds these calls are not as uncommon as the Department would like.

“It’s common all year long. We’ve had multiple burning complaints this year. This one put us over 80 complaints so far this year. It’s a bit concerning going into the dryer season.”

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department asks the public to be on the lookout for potential fires going into the dryer season. Richert says if you see an unintended fire, to call emergency services.
