Month Long Prescribed Burn Planned in Siwash

The Siwash area west of Williams Lake will have a prescribed burn starting today [April 16].

The Cariboo Fire Centre (CAFC) says the BC Wildfire Service, in partnership with the Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District, will start the prescribed burn this morning, and it will go until May 15.

CAFC says the burn will cover 270 hectares and will be split into five treatment areas covering the land west of the Yunisit’in Community and southwest of Alexis Creek.

CAFC adds that the five areas being treated will be ignited at different times, and the ignitions will be extinguished at the end of each day. The ignitions will only start if the conditions allow good smoke ventilation.

Smoke may be visible to residents in the area and people traveling along Highway 20.

Firefighters will be in the area to monitor conditions throughout the burns.
