Cariboo region’s unemployment rate hits year and half high

The jobless rate in the Cariboo region was once again on the rise last month.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says it was 7.3 percent in February, up from 7.2 the previous month, and from 6.6 percent in February of 2024.

It was the fourth straight year over year decline and it is now the highest its been since August of 2023.

Ferrao says there were around 32-hundred fewer people working in the region last month compared to a year ago.

“There were small declines in construction, manufacturing, as well as wholesale and retail trade.  There were small increases in accommodation and food services.”

The national unemployment rate was unchanged last month at 6.6 percent.

BC’s jobless rate came in at an even 6 percent.

That was third among the provinces.

Quebec at 5.3 percent and Saskatchewan at 5.4 were lower.
