Black Bear Deaths Lowest in Over 10 Years but up in Williams Lake

According to British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Services (BC COS), black bear deaths have dropped nearly 50 percent since last year. However, the COS says more work is needed to maintain this trend.

COS released numbers showing a total of 303 black bear deaths throughout last year. A significant drop from 603 the year before.

According to a post on COS’ social media, this year’s total is the lowest total of black bear deaths in B.C. since 2011.

Williams Lake had the most black bears euthanized, with 13, up from eight last year.

Quesnel saw a large decrease in total deaths with five, down from 22 last year.

Prince George had a significant decrease in bear deaths, totaling only eight this year compared to last year’s 76. Prince George was leading the province in euthanizations for six out of eight years.

Only one bear was put down in 100 Mile.
