Cariboo region’s unemployment rate hits 8 month high

The Cariboo region’s unemployment rate is the highest its been since March.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says “the November unemployment rate was 5.8 percent, compared to 5.5 percent a year ago.”

It was 6.5 percent in March.

Ferrao says the 5.8 percent recorded last month was also up from 4.9 percent in October.

He says there were around 53-hundred unemployed people in the region last month, and roughly 16-hundred fewer people working.

“In terms of employment we have 85,500 people working. A year ago there were a bit more, 87,100. Construction and manufacturing were down slightly, as well as professional, scientific and technical services. There were small increases in healthcare and social assistance and accommodation and food services.”

The national unemployment rate was 6.8 percent last month, up from 6.5 in October.

And BC’s jobless rate came in at 5.7 percent, down slightly from 5.8.

Only Saskatchewan was lower among the provinces at 5.6 percent.

The Snaking River Wildfire is reported to be over 1,000 hectares in size. The BC Wildfire Service says day time heat and solar radiation have continued to dry the area, producing more fuel for the fire. The fire, located 65 kms west of Quesnel is producing smoke that is visible from Quesnel, Highway 97, and surrounding communities.
