Higher Gas Prices in Quesnel Being Investigated

The BC Utilities Commission(BCUC) confirms it is looking into higher fuel prices in Quesnel.

On December 3, the BCUC announced in a letter that they have sent letters to Quesnel gasoline retailers to “request pricing information”.

Retail gasoline and diesel prices have been much higher in Quesnel than in the neighbouring communities of Williams Lake, Prince George, and Hixon.

According to GasBuddy.com today [December 5], the average price of gasoline from a retail merchant in Quesnel is 159.9 cents per litre.

That compares to 151.9 cents per litre in Williams Lake and 154.9 cents in Prince George.

This is the lowest price gap in the last few months. Last month the price gap on average was 20 cents per litre, and got as high as 23 cents.

Motorists in Quesnel voiced complaints and concerns on Facebook and wrote letters to the MLA and the BCUC with little response. Motorists started to boycott retail gas stations in Quesnel by not purchasing their fuel from those locations.

The BCUC is “requesting further information” from Quesnel gas retailers on two things. How gasoline and diesel prices are set in their retail area and retail stations; and why gasoline pump prices in Quesnel and at their retail station in particular (if applicable) are higher than in nearby markets, such as Williams Lake and Prince George.
