ICBC holding month long driving blitz

Drivers in B.C. will need to be on high alert this month during ICBC’s distracted driving blitz.

The provincial insurance company is teaming up with the RCMP and Program Manager of Road Safety Mark Milner says you don’t need to be using your hand-held device to get penalized.

“They will be looking for people who have them in their hands or in their laps. People need to understand distracted driving laws in the province and just holding the phone can get you an offense.”

About 81 people die in B.C. each year due to distracted driving related accidents.

15 of those occur every year in the North Central area.

The current penalty for using a hand-held device while driving is a $167 fine plus three points off your license.
