Man who attempted to flee from police in Quesnel is now in custody

Quesnel RCMP have arrested a repeat offender who has a history of violence after he attempted to flee from police.

Sergeant Clay Kronebusch says they responded to a report of suspicious vehicle in the Spears Road and Heinzelman Road area at around 9 o’clock last (Oct 2) night.

“Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the suspect vehicle which fled at a high rate of speed nearly striking two police vehicles. Due to concerns for public safety the police did not pursue the vehicle but were able to maintain sight of the suspect vehicle.”

Kronebusch says the man was identified as the suspect from a break and enter from the night before.

He says a second attempt was then made to stop the suspect near Northstar Road and Highway 97 but the vehicle was able to avoid the road block and fled again, travelling south on Highway 97.

“The suspect vehicle was then observed colliding with a civilian vehicle near Maple Drive and Highway 97. The driver fled on foot and the 30-year old man was arrested after a brief foot chase.”

Kronebusch says the driver of the civilian vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He says the suspect remains in custody and is due to appear in court later today. (Oct 3)

Kronebusch says “these types of incidents can cause significant risk to the public, adding that the suspect driver showed no regard for the safety of others on the road.”
