Prescribed Burn Planned For The Siwash Area In The Chilcotin

BC Wildfire Service along with Yunesit’in First Nation and Cariboo Chilcotin Natural Resource District, will be conducting several prescribed burns totalling 270 hectares roughly 18 kilometres on the Newton Whitewater Road.

Fire Information Officer Madison Dahl says burning is expected to begin as early as tomorrow (October 2) and continue periodically until the end of the month only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation.

“Smoke from this prescribed burn may be visible to communters along Highway 20 from the Lees lookout (Hanceville rest stop) to Puntzi Lake and Redstone, along 900 road, and to the residences at Scum Lake,” Dahl said.

Dahl added that the objective of this prescribed burn is to increase forest health by eradicating Dwarf Mistletoe, reduce fire hazard and prepare the site for replanting.
