Williams Lake First Nations hosting their competition pow wow this weekend

The 2024 Speaking Our Truth Competition Pow Wow is making it’s return for the third year.

The pow wow, which is hosted by Williams Lake First Nation, is a ceremony to hold up their culture and honour ancestors in a form of dance with different categories.

Chief Willie Sellars talks about the difference between a competitive pow wow and one that’s traditional.

“Each of the categories will have a prized placing, and there’s also a lot of money up in the drum category so you see some of the best drums, you see some of the best dancers in western Canada and on the United States at our competition pow wow.” say Sellars

“The traditional pow wow, which happens in the spring, is more local, lowkey, a lot more ceremonial.”

Sellars says this weekend will see 150 to 200 dancers from all over North America, and of all ages compete for the top spot in their category.

Most importantly, he says it’s about gathering in a good way, adding that nothing brings people together like a pow wow does.

Sellars encourages everyone to attend this year’s Speaking Our Truth Competition Pow Wow, with grand entry tonight (September 6th) at 7:00pm, Saturday at 1:00pm, and Sunday at 1:00pm.

More information about the event can be found on Williams Lake First Nation’s Facebook page here.
