Province recognizes Cariboo communities for adopting small-scale multi-unit housing bylaw

Nearly 90 percent of the BC communities, including the Cariboo, are adopting bylaws to bring more small-scale multi-unit housing.

Zoning bylaws had to change by June 30th, 2024, to allow for various units, such as a minimum of one secondary suite or detached accessory dwelling unit, among others.

The Province said in the coming months, an evaluation will be done for the legislation’s implementation to ensure its success in helping to deliver more small-scale multi-unit homes.

The Cariboo region, as well as 100 Mile House, Quesnel, and Williams Lake have adopted, or are working to adopt the bylaws.

An extension was granted to the District of Wells due to the current impacts of the wildfire and evacuation alerts and orders.

Small-scale multi-unit homes would create more options for housing, such as seniors looking to downsize, or young families searching for more attainable homes.

More information about the legislation and small-scale multi-unit homes can be found on the Province’s website here.
