Cariboo region dealing with smoky skies

A Smoky Skies Bulletin has been issued for the entire Cariboo Region.

Gavin King, an Air Quality Meteorologist with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Climate Strategy, says it was issued due to high concentrations of fine particulate in the atmosphere.

“The Ministry of Environment has issued a Smokey Skies Bulletin due to the high concentrations of fine particulate in the atmosphere. This is a very broad bulletin. It covers a significant portion of the province and that’s because there is a lot of smoke cooling in our atmosphere right now from all the fires in various parts of the province.”

King says it is quite high in Quesnel at 37 micrograms per cubic metre for the hourly reading at 1 o’clock, but he says conditions will change.

“We are expecting the conditions to stay poor for the next several hours until weather changes later this evening, perhaps into the overnight, when winds will come from the west and move the smoke to the east away from the community.”

King says the 24-hour average for Quesnel is at 25 micrograms per cubic metres, which is still high.

While the smoke isn’t expected to last, he says even short term exposure to smoke is still unhealthy.
