Wildfires outside the Cariboo main factor for hazy skies

BC Wildfire Service crews have continued to put out wildfires in the province, with 18 currently in the Cariboo.

Over the last couple days, the region has seen a bit more smoke and haze in the skies through the region.

Fire Information Officer, Madison Dahl says the fires in our region isn’t the primary cause for the smoke.

“A lot of the smoke that we’re experiencing is coming from fires in other Fire Centres, particularly south of us, but it is variable and it does shift with the wind and weather conditions.” says Dahl.

“We do recommend that the public utilize publicly accessible resources, like FireSmoke.ca, where they can see the direction that the wind might be bringing smoke from.”

The site forecasts smoke to hover over the Cariboo throughout the afternoon and into the early evening, and return tomorrow (July 20th) afternoon.

As conditions remain hot and dry, Dahl says human caused wildfires are completely preventable, and divert critical resources to naturally caused wildfires.

She says it’s always a good idea to practice safe and responsible open fire use, and anyone found in contravention open burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for upwards of $1,000, and may need to pay an administrative penalty if convicted in court.

The Cariboo is under a Category 2 and 3 fire prohibition, along with a province wide Category 1 campfire ban until November 1st.

More information on the current wildfires can be found on the BC Wildfire Service map here.
