South Cariboo’s 2023 Citizen of the Year was chosen

The 2023 Citizen of the Year was announced during the Canada Day celebrations at the 108 Mile Heritage Site.

Mildred Halcro was chosen through a committee, consisting of 20 past Citizens of The Year with the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Manager, Donna Barnett says Halcro has been volunteering for as long as she can remember.

“Whenever anybody needs any help, call Millie, she’ll come.” says Barnett.

“She helps out the Heritage Site on July 1st, she helps out the Easter events in town, she goes to the curling club and helps out there, she goes everywhere she can to help. She’s just a wonderful lady, and always there to help.”

Barnett added that they had 7 awesome nominees and that everybody needs to be congratulated, saying it wasn’t an easy decision.

She says volunteerism is one thing that’s slowly being lost, but with citizens such as Halcro, communities benefit so much.

Without them, Barnett says events for families, curling, hockey, among others wouldn’t happen, because volunteerism is the back bone to the community.
