Trial date set for police officer charged in Williams Lake

A police officer will go to trial in the summer in connection with an incident in Williams Lake.

35-year old Constable Madeline Hjelden is due back in court on August 19th.

Hjelden is facing one count each of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm following an incident back on May31st, 2020.

According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO), police responded to a report of an intoxicated male in significant emotional distress on a motorbike.

Police located and attempted to speak to the man but he fled the scene.

The IIO says police followed and an interaction occurred between the police vehicle and the motorbike, causing the man to lose control.

He sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The IIO investigated and recommended that charges be considered.
