Environment Canada issues Special Weather Statement for parts of the Cariboo

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for both Williams Lake and Quesnel.

The statement, issued by Environment Canada, forecasts both cities to see heavy rain as the region reaches the tail end of the wettest month.

Warning Preparedness Meteorologist, Armel Castellan says the rain could continue into Friday (June 28th) morning.

“We’re looking at 30 to 50 millimetres of rain, so not an extraordinary amount.” says Castellan.

“Probably not really causing any issues when it comes to flooding, but certainly bringing the river levels up fairly quickly, so there’s some dangers associated.”

Castellan adds anytime there’s moderate to heavy rain in areas that may not have seen rain in a while, can cause some dangers.

He says the soil can be hydrophobic causing flash flooding and water pooling, which he notes isn’t as much of a danger as river recreation.

Past Friday, Castellan says we should see less precipitation with Sunday being an exception.

More information regarding the weather can be found on Environment Canada’s website here.
