Electric vehicle chargers were a topic of discussion for 100 Mile House Council.
On June 11th, a report was received by council updating them on the $10,000 project to bring more charging stations to the community at the Cariboo Mall.
This did come with some pushback, as Councillor Donna Barnett says it shouldn’t fall on the community.
“The concerns I have, I don’t believe taxpayers money should be building charging stations.” says Barnett.
“On private property, we have gas stations now that are putting in charging stations. We got enough to do with taxpayers money for infrastructure and maintenance of our communities.”
Barnett adds that she doesn’t believe in putting in this kind of money that could, in essence, put them in competition with the private sector.
100 Mile House does have charging stations in place already, with one at the Tourist Info Centre, and one at a private gas station.
She believes that is efficient enough, and if there is pressure to have more charging stations, the private sector would step up and put them in, as it’s good business.
Barnett mentions Calgary’s recent water main break due to old infrastructure as an example, saying 100 Mile House’s is aging as well and should be a priority.
