Cariboo North MLA taking on new role as elections approach

Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes is taking over the role as Shadow Minister for Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

This comes after Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson, who was the previous Shadow Minister, joined the Conservative Party back at the tail end of last month.

Oakes says this new responsibility isn’t new to her.

“I had the role prior to Lorne, so I’ve had this role as a Shadow Minister previously, so I certainly have the experience on that both as the Shadow Minister, but front line experience of what happens when emergencies happen.”

Oakes says she’s happy to take on the role, especially with the experience the region has with wildfires, floods, and landslides, adding it’s prepared her to help communities.

She says the experience coming from rural and remote areas helps provide another perspective to Victoria, that often creates legislation or policies that don’t reflect the reality in those communities.

This role will be to continue pushing them to understand those realities faced.

Oakes will still be taking on the role as Shadow Minister for Post-Secondary Education, which gives her the benefits of having the experience and relationships built.

More information about Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes’ new role can be found on the BC United Caucus’ website here.
