Williams Lake’s Pride crosswalk has been vandalized during Pride Month.
This isn’t the first time the crosswalk outside the Central Cariboo Arts Centre has been vandalized, as it saw damages done back in 2018 when it was first painted.
Pride Society Interim President, Willa Julius says actions like these are what makes Pride Month relevant.
“It kind of proves why we still need a society, why we still need to have societies in general when stuff like this happens.” says Julius.
“It just goes to show that there is a lot of work to do to make our city into a safe place for everyone.”
Members of Williams Lake City Council also spoke about the crosswalk, denouncing the damages caused.
Mayor Surinderpal Rathor said he doesn’t support anyone vandalizing property, as City staff have to go out and fix the crosswalk through tax dollars.
He requests everyone to respect other people’s views, no different than how other people would want to be respected.
Rathor added there would be hefty fines given to anybody that damages properties such as these.
For those wanting to support the Pride Society and the LGBTQ2A+, Julius says people can try to use pronouns, opening up conversations, and celebrate the support garnered over the years.
