Fishing Licence Requirements Waived This Weekend In The Cariboo & The Province

It has officially begun!

The Annual Father’s Day Family Fishing Weekend is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary of bringing parents and their children together to try this sport now through Sunday.

The goal of the weekend is to encourage family and friends to get outdoors and go fishing.”

Jessica Greinke, Communications Coordinator with Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC said, “The family fishing weekend aims to make it accessible and inexpensive for people to try fishing or introduce new family members to fishing.”

Greinke noted that there are free fishing days available starting today (June14)

This means that the Provincial Government waives the requirement for anglers to buy a freshwater licence and the Department of fisheries and Oceans does the same thing for saltwater licences.”

She noted this weekend offers a place for families to come together with other angling enthusiasts and that the number of participants has grown over the years.

The great thing about it being the 25th year is that we’re seeing people that attended when they were younger now bringing their own younger family members. We have around 10-thousand people participate province-wide now in this event. This year the licence sales data indicates that there’s been an uptick in the amount of of 16 to 24 year old’s purchasing licences which is fantastic to see among our youth.”

While you are permitted to fish licence free now through Sunday some requirements remain in effect that can be found on the BC Family Fishing website and the Fisheries and Oceans website.
